Chapter Seven

The children were frightened. Diego Sandoval cradled the little boy in his arms and the girl clung to his leg. He whispered words of encouragement and again Ursula felt a boiling anger that her superiors had no problem targeting children.

Coupled with the fact that she was being painted as an abductee and Solomon as her abductor, she was so angry she sputtered. She hadn’t foreseen this happening, hadn’t thought the military would do this. Hanging their dirty laundry out to air was not the military way. Her own people would have to be hog-tied and held prisoner before they’d do something to put her in such jeopardy. Somebody else was pulling the strings in this operation, but who? The President? Homeland Security? CIA? NSA? The Secretary of Defense? The list got longer the more she thought about it. Who would benefit from the vampires being eliminated and why?

She wasn’t going to get answers unless she went out and found them. But then again, she didn’t know where to look. But she had someone in this house who would.

“Right now,” Ursula said to Solomon, “we need to get to the bottom of this attack. And we can’t move openly with our faces plastered all over the media.”

“What do you suggest?” Solomon said.

“We have someone in this house who can do it.”

He glanced up. “You mean the reporter.”

Ursula nodded. “I Googled her. At least Amelia isn’t afraid of technology. She even has DSL. And I found a lot about her. She’s not a hack journalist and I think she’d love to dig for us.”

“How do you intend to interest her in our plight?”

“Elder Turi worked wonders with me. I’m sure he can make a solid case for investigating. Right now, your people are running all over the world looking for sanctuary. The U.S. has the juice to close a lot of doors in a lot countries. We need to find who’s behind these attacks and stop it. I don’t care how high up the chain of command this goes.” Even to the President.

“Our allies won’t betray us.”

“That could change in five hours.” It already had changed. “I’m not running for the rest of my life, and neither are you. I’m going to talk to her.”

“No.” Max held up his hand. “Elder Turi only.”

Ursula sneered. “Why not me?”

Max smiled at her shaking his head. “Because if you don’t get your way, you’ll hurt her.”

She shrugged. “A little pain is a great persuasion technique.”

Solomon laughed. “I don’t think so.”

“Worked for me in foster care and look how I ended up.” She still had all her fingers and toes.

Solomon put a hand on her arm. “No.”

“Okay, I’m going to let this one go because I’m nice. But I just want you to know, it’s not because you’re men or immortal or fifty-seven times stronger than I am.”

Max glanced at Solomon, his lips quirking. “It’s amazing how she maintains her dignity.”

“Yes,” Solomon replied, “even in the face of overwhelming odds. That’s what I like about her.
